This is such a GREAT idea! There is so much to explore in the 625 acres that so many people could not experience in the past, and so I am really excited that there will be more opportunity to enjoy the Campbell/Dousman property from both an historic and natural perspective. As a former sawyer/naturalist at Mill Creek, I am very pleased to see this project go through and look forward to partaking of it, hopefully this summer! --Jim Sturgill, Michigan

Great additions to Mill Creek. One always has to keep things fresh when it comes to history and I have a feeling these additions will benefit all! See you in July! --Andrew Johnson, Grosse Ile, Michigan

I have been coming to Mill Creek for over 15 years and each year I enjoy taking my wife to sit by the mill pond. I am worried this will change Mill Creek and I'm worried that I might have to find a new spot to spend my time in northern Michigan; after this and the zip line I don't think I'll feel welcome. - Frank Gross, Michigan

Response: Thank you for your comment. Let me begin by assuring you, and all of our visitors who appreciate northern Michigan’s tranquil natural beauty, that you will always be welcome at Mill Creek.

The new features that we are adding are designed to help us more effectively interpret Mill Creek’s rich and fascinating natural history. These are not just rides or gimmicks, they are carefully chosen experiences that will allow our visitors to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of natural history while having fun at the same time. Visitors will be guided in small groups through the nature course while the guide informs them of the many different plant and animal species present in the Mill Creek environment. We’ve borrowed many ideas that have been successfully used in eco-tourism destinations around the world, including rainforests and national parks, places that also wanted to promote and preserve the natural beauty of their parks and sites.

We share your concern about preventing damage to our beautiful environment, and we have chosen new features that will have minimal impact on the environment and promote the parks natural resources. In addition, the trail work that we are undertaking will allow visitors to access many peaceful, scenic locations along the creek that weren’t universally accessible last year. We understand the importance of making these tranquil spots accessible to everyone, and so in the last few years we have acted on a broad initiative to build and improve trail systems for everyone’s use. In addition to building and improving these trails, we’ve placed benches on these trails for rest and relaxation, including several overlooking the creek. We hope that you and your wife will decide to return to Mill Creek in the coming years and continue to enjoy the site’s unique history, peaceful natural beauty and informative interpretive programs. Thanks again for your comment. - Phil Porter, Director, Mackinac State Historic Parks
